In a July 2016 news release, Google announced that there are now over 1 BILLION free Gmail email addresses. AOL still has 2.4 Million email users. There are over 1 BILLION Apple devices worldwide, most of which have an Apple email address.

Today, email is a fact of life. Any business, in fact, any person that doesn’t have an email address is out of contact with the rest of the world.

According to About.com, over 2.5 Billion email users send out 205 Billion emails daily worldwide. Almost all email addresses belong to people and businesses in developed countries, those most likely to have the technology to use email. That translates to an average of more than 2 email addresses per person. The point is – email is one of the primary methods to communicate.

Initially, Internet providers were limited to companies you would have to dial into, such as EarthLink, Prodigy, AOL and AT&T. As part of their paid service, they would give you an email account that you could use. Users were given email addresses with domains like “@ix.netcom.net”, “@prodigy.net”, “@aol.com” and “@sbcglobal.net.” As businesses adopted these addresses, they created emails like hairsalon@aol.com or mjones.smithlaw@sbcglobal.net.

Business with resources (i.e., money) were able to use the existing system to get their own domains such as ibm.com, microsoft.com, bofa.com or mtv.com. (Yes, MTV has had a domain name since 1993!)

A major advantage of having a domain name is the ability to get email delivered to that domain. Which email would you think was more professional – Fdrew.MTV@aol.com – or – Fdrew@mtv.com?

There are many advantages to having a personalized email domain. Three of the top reasons are:

  1. Having a personalized email domain adds to your business branding. When a customer sends an email to mary.jones@TheShoeSpot.com, in the back of their mind, they are thinking about the business – and possibly the shoes they sell.
  2. When you own the domain you have control of all the possible email addresses for that domain. The number of email addresses you can have in your own domain is limitless. Not only can you have an individual address for each employee in the business, but you can have ‘utility’ email addresses such as “sales@”, “info@”, “promotions@” or “techsupport@.”
  3. You have a better chance of creating ‘common’ email addresses. The odds of there being a ‘mary.smith’ already at all of the free email providers if very high. But, since your email domain is unique, if there is only one Mary Smith in your company, then you can easily create the email ‘mary.smith@yourcompany.com’ without worrying if someone else has that email address.

It’s easy to get started with your own email domain and pick an email hosting company. First you select your domain name and register it, if it’s available, at a domain registrar like GoDaddy or Network Solutions. Most registrars offer email hosting as part of the registration or you can host your email at Microsoft with Office 365.
